Nothing really new to blog about. Bones isn't limping any more (thank god!) and the swelling and heat in his back pastern is gone. I haven't ridden or lunged him in over two weeks. I've mostly been going to the barn to feed and leaving. I haven't ridden George either, other than occasionally hopping on bareback for a bit. I'd love to hit the trail before it gets freezing. Hmm, oh.. I'm thinking of switching Bone's feed. Right now he gets 1 scoop am/pm of Purina Equine Senior, free choice grass hay and grass (what's left of it). I did have him on 1 scoop (that comes with it) am/pm of Dumor weight booster but, I decided to take him off of it. I bought alfalfa cubes and really want to put him on them but I don't want to give him a protein overload. Cubes are 16% protein and the Purina Senior is 14%. I want something with less protein, 10% or 12%, and a fat content higher than 6%. I have been looking around a lot online and have found a couple that I like. Triple Crown 10%, Nutrena Farr Legacy, and another one from Nutrena.. it's a 10% sweet feed. But, I can't find any of these in my area at all! I've looked at Tractor Supply a few times and they just don't have what I need. Gah.. it's just really frustrating. Does anyone have suggestions?

I've been feeding Nutrena Safe Choice http://www.nutrenaworld.com/Screens/Equine/Safe_Choice.aspx for about 3 months now and LOVE IT! It was recommended by my farrier. It has 14% crude protein but it almost cancels out the need for special supplements because it has all the daily requirements a horse needs! I was amazed at the difference I saw when feeding this compared to other grains/feeds. Plus this stuff is designed for easier digestion in horses. My new rescue mare has really started filling out since switching her feed to this. Her new hoof growth looks amazing too. My friend also told me that one of her horse got out of its stall one night, ate about 35 lbs of it , and NEVER foundered! I'm super impressed with stuff and TLC is supposed to be picking this stuff up too. Sorry for such a long comment, lol I just really love this stuff!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I actually bought Safe Choice but, ended up changing my mind and returning it. I've heard quite a few good things about it and it does have a higher fat content than the Purina Senior. Hmmm, I'll do a little more research on it and maybe give it a try.
ReplyDeleteI just read your new post and am glad that you are going to give it a try. I'm hoping it will give you the same results that I have had. Ive been able to cut out 75% of the supplements I used for hoof and weight gain. I wish I would have got better before pics of my mare like you did. The change has been unreal. I will try to post later some on my blog...
