Bones and I have officially started our hill work. The vet came out on Thursday, and said to start walking him up and down the hill(s) the following day, but it was a rainy weekend! Sunday we walked up and down the big hill once. There is a large hay field at the top of the field- so that's a nice reward for him.
Yesterday we walked up the big hill, down the other side of the big hill, back up, and back down. All with "snack breaks" at the top and bottom of each hill so he has some kind of reward.
I don't know how much is too much for him, or if there is a too much? I don't want to make him sore and even more uncomfortable. I'll research it and see what others have done.
This injury, or whatever you'd call it, is obviously not ideal. But, with the trust and respect issues Bones and I have been having, I really don't mind having to only do ground work (no lunging either). He's been progressively easier to catch, and yesterday HE walked up to ME! =D
I guess that could be due to all of the treats I've been giving him.. buuut, right now I'm just happy that he isn't running away from me. Lol
The bute that the vet gave me is in a tube like dewormer, and Bones HATES being dewormed. But, since I've had to give him the bute everyday.. it's becoming a nonchalant, fight-free process.
Sunday Bonesy got a bath! The wash rack is in the other pasture, closed off like a stall, and I was worried that Bones and George would start fighting or something while I was giving him a bath. So, I put George in his stall. The other horses didn't really bother us.. if they came up I just squirted them with the hose and they went away. Lol Bones did very good with his bath, stood very nicely for the most part.
Depending on what I find in researching hill work, I plan on walking Bones out on the trail a bit today. There will be about 3-4 decent sized hills on the way. This is also going to help get him used to trails and hopefully when he's better.. we can hit the trails in a non-spooked fashion! Or, at least less-spooked. ;)
Up on the hill. It's so pretty up there!
After his bath
I guess he got tired while I was messing with Ollie. Look at his cute little chin resting on the post! =)
