I've been sooo frustrated at Bones lately. He knocked me down when I was putting on his halter yesterday. He has been acting high strung and out of control. We are clearly having a respect issue here. Not only is there a respect issue, I believe Ollie is coming into heat/in heat.
The gate between the two pastures has been knocked down twice since I've been back. I believe it was from George and Bones (they're the only two mature geldings at the barn) fighting over the gate. Yesterday, the neighbor told me they heard load noises like gun shots (horses kicking a gate) in the middle of the night.
Steve told me that George has been acting weird this past week, and just seemed like his mind was elsewhere. Yesterday when he brought George in from the field, George was acting like a fool. Rearing at the tying post, pushing into the arena gate trying to get out, disrespecting Steve in any which way. And, when George was out in the field he was sniffing Ollie's back area and following her around like a shadow.
And like I said, Bones knocked me down when I was haltering him in the field. When I was leading Bones up to the barn he was doing the "stallion walk". Prancing, head held high, tail up, basically acting like a douche bag.
Is it likely that if Ollie is coming into heat/in heat that these geldings are acting up?
Obviously I need to do a lot of work with Bones to get things back in order, but guess what? He's lame! I'm assuming it's from kicking the gate down.. but who knows. The farrier was supposed to come out yesterday, but he had to reschedule for Wednesday.
Blah.

ReplyDelete"Starting to wonder is the feeding is causing! too much energy! ^^ opps lol
ReplyDeleteSheesh... doesn't sound like your having a good week. What are you feeding? Ive upped Daya's grain (natural choice by nutrina) plus turnout in our big pasture since she went into her last trimester and I have been getting the same p*ssy/ disrespectful attitude from her as well... Starting to wonder is the feeding is causing too much energy! Also, do you think Bones could have been gelded late or even be proud cut? Sounds like he has hormones of his own!
ReplyDeleteHe's getting about 2/3 of a scoop of SafeChoice by Nutrena once daily. He's on 24/7 turnout (except right now, stall rest until I figure out what's going on with his lameness). He very may well be cut late, or proud.
ReplyDeleteBut, he's been pastured with mares the whole time I've had him. He has never acted like this. Same with George, I owned him for two+ years and he has never acted out of control like he has been recently.
The first time I saw Bones act like this was the first time I put Ollie in his pasture.
George charged at Steve (extremely dangerous, I know!) the day after I brought Ollie there.
I'm not blaming it on poor Ollie! But, definitely something to consider.
I was reading what both of you said. It could be because Ollie is still "new" to the place. She's a brand new female for them to show off to. My geldings got into it when I brought my mare (Diamond) onto the place. They showed off for a couple weeks and backed off. When she came into heat, they started showing off again. Eventually, they ignore her when she's in heat; showing little interest besides sniffing her bum.
