So frustrating...

I moved Ginger and Ollie to this new barn less than two weeks ago. It's not working out, and I am going to move them. The barn owner and I had a deal, that he has now changed several times. I am so frustrated. WHY is it so hard to find a good barn? =\

Luckily, I have a few options at this point. My friend is looking to lease a house with a barn, pasture, outdoor arena, and a bit of trails. I would like to board there, but with it being winter, I would really like to have an indoor arena.

I have contacted a barn that I used to board at, and they have available spots. This barn is a self-care barn, but they put round bales out in the fields so you don't have to come two or three times a day to feed hay. When I boarded there before, I typically came once a day to feed grain, groom, ride, etc. They pretty much do pasture board, but you have the option to have a stall as well. They have a (really) small indoor arena, and 150+ acres of trails.

There are also several full care barns that I am going to look at. I just want to be careful where I move them.. I seriously don't want to keep moving my horses around. It's a pain in the ass for me, and I imagine they don't care for it either!

The mares are both doing well. Ginger has lost some weight since I got her. Her previous owner said she was just getting a 3qt scoop 2x/daily, and grass. She was a little ribby but nothing major. She is even more ribby, and you can see the top of her sacrum (I think that is what it's called, lol!). I have had her on a 14% low starch pelleted feed- 3/4 scoop 2x/daily, an omega 3 supplement, and grass hay. I am trying this new supplement, Equipride, that my vet recommended. I've switched her to crimped oats at 3/4 scoop 2x/daily, 15 ounces of the Equipride daily, grass hay, and she is on Corta-Flx. I am giving this plan some time to show results, if I don't see any weight gain soon I will up her amount of oats.

Ollie is also on Equipride, at 10 ounces a day, grass hay, and just 1/4 scoop oats 2x/day. She's an easy keeper, so she doesn't need a whole lot of grain.

I have ridden Ollie once, just around a little paddock. She didn't do anything bad, but I only rode her for like 5 minutes.

Anyways, picture time!

I think this picture really shows her weight loss. Poor Gingy!

Her sad tail. Apparently she had pin worms very bad, and rubbed her tail off. It looks like a colt chewed it off to me!

  3. I've been following your blog for a while. :) The barn I work at is $250 /month for full board. We have an indoor and outdoor arena as well as an indoor round pen. Of course, we also have a wash rack. If you let me know, I can get you in contact with the barn manager and owner. Very nice, quiet, drama free barn. Located in Baltimore, Ohio.

  4. I just saw this! I believe your barn is the one my friend, Jana, is about to move. It sounds great, but a bit too far for me! I'm sure I'll see ya around there! =]
