I'm very happy to say that Bones and I are back in the saddle! We didn't ride for at least 2 weeks, and it sucked. During those weeks, we worked a lot on the ground, teaching/earning respect and trust for one another. I think that we have a pretty good understanding now, but it is still a work in progress and an on going thing.
He is doing so fantastic under saddle, it makes me so proud! =) We actually had an English lesson today. It was my second one (well, second consistent one at least). I think I'm catching on.. I know I feel more comfortable/secure in an English saddle already. I need to practice in between lessons, which I'm excited to do now. I'm just working on super beginner stuff, like my seat, how to use my legs better, posting, etc.
Bones tends to short-cut turns, and gravitate to the inside while going clockwise. It's because of his right stifle. His front right leg is also kind of crooked.. so I'm sure that doesn't help the situation. Anyways, Angie (the instructor) taught me how to guide him through the turns. I definitely noticed an improvement by the time the lesson was over.
I asked Angie to kind of evaluate Bones and help me decide a discipline to start him in. She said he may do well in English Pleasure, or Country Pleasure. I wasn't really sure what they were when she mentioned them.. but I looked them up when I got home and it's just something I'm not interested in. At all. =)
Before and after each ride I hose him off and rub his stifle with liniment and DMSO. I'm kinnnnd of worried that he isn't getting fed his MSM everyday, so I think I'm just going to offer to feed my horses for one of the feedings (AM or PM). I need to make sure he's getting the MSM.
Hmmmm, I think that's all of the Bonesy news for now. Picture time! =D
Yeeeah. I just realized those are all facing the same way. DOH!

Still can't get over how pretty he is. That really sucks thats he is having stiffle issues but Im glad he is sound enough to ride now. What I wouldn't give for a gelding... 4 mares is a bit much for me right now. lol
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rachel! He is quite the looker. ;)
ReplyDelete4 mares? I thought you just had Daya, the baby, and the new mare?
